Styling a Scarf with Ladies Summer Dress Hats

Ladies summer dress hats are not only stylish but functional. And they are the perfect backdrop for a scarf. I know that when it’s hot outside, the last thing you want to wear is a scarf. So I thought I’d find other ways to style these great accessories.

Quote of the day: ” Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Jean Cocteau

We’ve showcased scarves many times on the blog showing different ways to tie them and different shapes of scarves. Yet I think these fabulous accessories get forgotten in the summer months. Granted, for many of you right now, it’s starting to feel like fall. But just in case the day warms up enough that you need to pull off your scarf, I have some ideas on what else you can do with it.

If you are looking for other ways to style scarves, make sure to see how a scarf looks on my waist. Or on my mom’s purse. And I even found a handful of other ways from the past.

So one idea is to tie your scarf around your hat. Depending on the scarf material and rim of the hat, many will stay on their own. Of course, you could also use some tape strips or safety pins to hold it in place.

This isn’t the first time that Lesley has used her scarf to decorate her hat. When she joined us for our summer brights post, she had used a blue and yellow scarf around her white hat.

And while this hat may be dark in color, here is one way to make it seem more summery.

Accessories

I love how Lesley pulled both the pink and yellow from the dress for her shoes, scarf, bracelet and purse.

The Dress

If this dress doesn’t scream summer than I don’t know what does. Yet it could be one of those dresses that transitions well to autumn since the background is dark.

You could easily wear a cardigan or jacket over the dress when the temperatures cool off. Or heck, there’s always the idea of layering under the dress. Just like we’ve showcased on the blog with a white blouse or with a t-shirt or turtleneck under it.

Yellow Purse

Do you have a yellow purse? I love how even my friend, Stacy, bought a yellow purse after I blogged about it. Even if you’re someone who says they can’t wear yellow, it doesn’t matter when it’s your handbag.

Even though yellow may seem like a spring or summer color, I think it’s great for fall too. Just think of the colors of the leaves as they are changing. Besides, there’s always mustard that seems more fallish.

I even rounded up some yellow purses under $50 for you in case you need one. And if you have/get one, make sure to send me an email (Jodie@Jtouchofstyle.com) with a photo of you carrying it and I’ll share it on my Instagram stories. I bet you’ll love it more than you realize.

Shoes

These bright pink flats, Lesley thrifted years ago. She has been finding herself wearing more and more flats instead of heels in the last couple of years. Especially after a little surgery on her foot last winter.

Lesley and Scarves

Lesley remembers that her mother wore scarfs frequently in the 50’s. In fact, this scarf is from her mom’s closet when her mom passed. Talk about a great sentimental piece.

Lesley said she still has her first scarf that a friend brought her from China as a thank you for dog sitting. She told me that she has hundreds of scarves and have been called the “Scarf Lady” by friends. It’s only because she feels like a scarf can take jeans and a tee and make it a stylish outfit. Granted she usually wears scarves in the fall and winter months, yet there are many ways to make it work for the summer too.

Then Lesley told me that scarves are probably her favorite accessory. Well….tied with her shoe addiction!! This is why she fits in so well with my mom and I, ha ha!
