Accessories Tips for a Crew Neck Top
There are accessories tips for every shaped neckline out there. I thought it’d be fun to how the three of us would approach this idea. Charlotte opted for the crew neck variety.
Quote of the day: “Belief in oneself is one of the most important bricks in building any successful venture.” Lydia M. Child
A crew neck top isn’t one that is promoted as flattering in the articles you read. However, I have to admit that when my mom and I went through her closet, we found a majority of these types of tops. But they can still be styled to look modern and chic.
So if your closet has this neckline, here’s Charlotte to give you some accessories tips for it.
1-With a scarf
2-Short necklace
3-Longer layering necklaces
4-Statement earrings
More information at the bottom of this post about the basics of the outfit and where these photos were taken if you’re interested. Make sure to check out Lesley’s different styling of a boat neck top, and my styling of a v-neck tee.

Accessories Tips with a Scarf for the Summer

Even though it is darn hot in AZ, that doesn’t always mean a scarf has to be left at home. In fact, the first blog post we styled after our move here, was all about wearing scarves in the summer.
This idea brought to you by Charlotte includes not only a scarf but also a necklace. That’s because my mom likes having her decolletage covered more than not.
Tips for this option:
1-A smaller necklace like this will not feel too hot or heavy in the warmer temperatures.
2-Scarves come in all shapes and sizes. Choose a thin one that doesn’t cover as much.
3-Also take into account the materiel of the scarf. Charlotte’s scarf is very thin and sheer which makes it perfect for the summer.
4-Let the scarf drape before tying it so it’s not as close to your neck.
5-My mom kept the earrings simple.

My mom bought this in the airport in Madrid, Spain. I swear the woman can find treasures anywhere and everywhere.

Short Necklace

A shorter necklace can work nice with a crew neck tee. While you can read many articles that tell you the “correct” length of necklace for this particular neckline, I think it’s silly to obsess over those details.
For example, even though the necklace hangs over onto the shirt, it’s still wonderful.
Accessories tips for shorter necklaces:
1-If your necklace is going to hang over the shirt, make sure there is contrast between the color of the necklace and the color of the top. For example, if my mom had worn a turquoise necklace, you wouldn’t notice it much. (Or even in the example in the widget above. The olive necklace is almost hidden against the olive shirt)
2-Since a shorter necklace is closer to your face, choose a color that looks good with your overall coloring.
3-Matching the earrings to the necklace is NOT required, but it’s fun!
Details about necklace
This yellow chunky, chain necklace was bought at Hobby Lobby. Seriously, you wouldn’t believe the deals you can find at some of the crafting stores. The chain detail is a huge trend for this spring and summer as I talked about in the spring trends post.
On top of that yellow accessories can make such a big statement especially if you tend to wear more neutrals. We’ve showcased this in the past on the blog.

Longer Layering Necklaces

The reason you will read that crew neck tops aren’t as flattering is because they tend to create a big expanse of color on your front side with no focal point. That’s where the idea of a longer necklace (and bonus points for layering two or more) comes into play.
The longer necklace/s create a vertical line down the front of your shirt just like a “v-neck” shirt does.
Details about these necklaces
The longer necklace and matching earrings are from Birdsong Designs. You can see how Charlotte wore them earlier this spring with the matching bracelet. You can still get 30% off any purchase from this small company with the code JTOS30.
The shorter of the two necklaces was one that was attached to a top that my mother purged. So she just removed it and kept it to wear on it’s own.
Insider tip: When you are ready to purge something, you might consider re-purposing the piece. Granted then you can’t donate it, but it’s even better to use what you already have.
For example, I have removed buttons and used them on other items. Or if you love the fabric, possibly have it remade into a different kind of top.
Another example, I have a blouse where I tore the sleeves taking it off. My mom added a different material for the new sleeves. And now that material has also torn, so I removed them and made it sleeveless.

Statement Earrings

In reality, accessories are there to create a point of interest. So if you want to bring the focus to your face, statement earrings are the way to go. In the summer, these can be the best option to keep things simple in the heat, yet you still look like you put some thought into your outfit.
Accessories tips for statement earrings
1-Look for lightweight earrings.
2-The earrings do NOT have to match the outfit. It’s modern to have them be a totally different color.
3-These can be long even if you have a shorter neck. Let them hang onto your decolletage…your necklace hangs on that space on your body, so why can’t your earrings?
4-Add in a colorful bracelet for more sass!
Detail of these earrings
My mom purchased these earrings on a site called Amrita Singh. I had posted a fabulous sale in one of my blog emails which I learned about since I had won one of their necklaces. And my mom took full advantage of the amazing deals.
Truthfully, my mom was a tad unsure about these at first because they are so whimsical. Her first thought was “what would everyone think?” And I bet most of us have those thoughts from time to time.
So tell me. What do you think when you see large, different earrings like these?
PS…I will tell you I think they are FUN! If I saw an 80 year old wearing these, I would stop her and tell her how much I loved them. Obviously the person wearing them is someone who knows a thing or two about joy and cheer!

How These Accessories Tips Came to Be
My mom started with a outfit that could be considered basic. A pair of jeans and a t-shirt. I love that she opted for a color tee that works wonderfully with her complexion along with colored jeans.
Charlotte has worn these jeans before on the blog, and you can see them styled 3 different ways.
The sneakers are a pair of Jambu footwear since we would be walking quite a bit. The tan color is a great neutral with the rest of the outfit.
Jeans: Fabrizio Gianni c/o~~ Top: Ruby Rd.~~ Shoes: Jambu c/o~~ Purse: Aldo~~Hat: thrifted
As for the other accessories not mentioned, my mom wore a green hat and carried a yellow purse. Most of us tend to wear tan, straw hats, but I think it’s important to find one that is good with our coloring.
I know I’ve commented before how a yellow purse can be the perfect color handbag for the summer.
Insider tip: I’ve written a post about the myths and tips for hat wearing on the Kuel site. I hope you check it out.
These photos were taken on our Sedona wine tour at the end of May. If you’ve never heard of Sedona, Arizona, it’s a beautiful area with red rock formations all around. In fact, it’s very reminiscent of Colorado to a degree. I’m sure you’ve heard about Red Rocks amphitheater in the foothills of Denver where many bands perform. That’s what it reminded us of.
As for the tour and wineries, we enjoyed ourselves whole heartedly. We visited Page Spring Cellars, Javelina Leap Vineyard and Winery, and Oak Creek Vineyards and Winery. Not all of the wine we tasted was amazing, but we did bring home 2 bottles and a ton of great photos.
We bought the tour through AZ Winery Tours and it made it so much more enjoyable than having to drive around ourselves.
