Simplified Belt Style Depending on What You Like Best

The idea of belt style is something that we don’t discuss much. But I had a request from a reader about how to pull off wearing which belts with jeans. I wanted to showcase different options of wearing belts and you decide your preference.

Quote of the day: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Muriel Strode

Do you like belts? Then by all means you should wear them. These small accessories can add such a great detail to many outfits. But I wanted to show you some choices. Most of us have basic belts meaning brown or black in color, so I concentrated on that for the first three options.

Which Look do You Prefer?

I wanted to showcase this outfit a couple of different ways and you decide which you like for yourself. Remember, there is no right or wrong. You are not being graded. But I will give you my opinions and the whys. Opinions are good because they make us think in different ways, but it’s still not right or wrong.
In reality, I doubt you would see me in any of these outfits and think “she looks horrible.”

Option 1: Wearing a top and jacket with jeans. Many women don’t like to tuck in their tops. Plus, I did this because I think it’s modern to leave your shirt longer than your jacket.
The only caveat is to check your proportions. For this outfit, the top half and bottom half are about equal which can be less than optimal. Especially since I added in print boots that catch your attention.

Look 2: So the same outfit with the top tucked in. Now the bottom half of the look is longer than the top half. It actually seems like I have legs (I’m 5’2″).
Outfit 3: Now I added a collar (thrifted) with a magnet “clasp” to keep it closed. (See this post for more details about the magnet). The proportions aren’t any different; you are just adding more focus to the top half of the outfit.
Look 4: This is the same outfit with a brown belt. Granted a brown belt with darker jeans doesn’t stand out much, but it takes away the bright metal spot of the jean snap button. Then again, maybe that snap button ties together with the magnet? See, how it can be a personal preference?

The Takeaway

Things to think about with your outfits:
1-Proportion with tuck vs untuck.
2-Where is the focus of the outfit?
3-Does it seem intentional or finished? That’s why some people like a belt with their jeans. Others don’t worry about that.
4-AND THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR: Are you happy with your outfit?

Belt Style with the Half Tuck

The half-tuck is one of those options that can really set an outfit apart. I think with the right top, it’s a wonderful choice for many of us because you create a longer leg line while still covering the bum somewhat.
So I tried wearing the same basic belt with this same outfit. What do you think?

Things to Consider with a Half Tuck

1-The blouse/top/shirt can’t be too stiff
2-You can also tuck it in off-center to give an asymmetrical look.
3-Jeans work best if they are mid to low rise.
4-If you do have high-rise jeans, then you might try tucking them into one of your pockets instead

No Belt Loops Means No Belt?

If there aren’t belt loops on your pants, does it mean you shouldn’t wear a belt? It’s like asking if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? LOL!
Of course, you can wear a belt with these kinds of jeans, pants or even a skirt. In my example above, I showed it with the top tucked all the way into the leather jeans. In my opinion, it can look more finished this way.

Insider tip: If you are wearing a belt like this, maybe it’s obvious, but don’t unbuckle it to go to the bathroom. Just pull it up when you pull the pants down.

Let’s Talk Contrasting Belt Style

Now all of the examples in the first part of this post showcased a brown belt on dark jeans/pants. This means there wasn’t much contrast between the two. This is a great way to ease your way into wearing a belt if you don’t want a TON of focus at your midsection.
You might ask why to wear a belt at all if you don’t want to focus on your midsection. And my answer would be it’s a personal preference. It can make the look more intentional or add-in that “Je ne sais quo.”

Now, if you do want your belt to be more of a focus of the outfit, then you need to think of a contrasting color. I grabbed 3 examples from past posts to prove this idea.

Shopping for Belts

If you’ve ever shopped for belts, then you realize they can be quite expensive. That’s why I will look for them at the secondhand stores often.
Other options?
1-Use a scarf
2-Swap with friends
3-Grab a self belt from a dress or jumpsuit.
