Simplistic Way to Spice up Your Long Cardigan Style
The long cardigan style is still going strong as you know if you’ve been shopping lately. Most of us tend to buy the basic colors so here’s a simplistic way to spice up your basic long cardigan style.
Quote of the day: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” John F. Kennedy
This idea for this week’s post is from Kim, who asked about styling long jackets. I wanted to give some variety to the idea, so my mom contributed with her long cardigan style.
The funny thing is that Charlotte didn’t want to wear this cardigan at first because it’s a “blah color” (her words, not mine). Yet we all tend to have the basic colors for many of our pieces. And it’s the reasoning for my rationale of why we should add color to our outfits. Once my mom put this cardigan with these other colors, I think you’d agree that it’s a marvelous long cardigan style outfit.
You can also see how she styled it with another color combination here.

Adding Spice with Color
So when my mom said she didn’t want to wear this cardigan because it was so blah, I figured that’s because she was planning on styling a monochromatic outfit. Granted a monochromatic outfit can work just like my mom showcased with her camo recently.
Yet look how the outfit really shines with the addition of the red jeans. Not only the color red, but my mom added in some purple in her hat, earrings and purse. It all ties together so well with the print of the hat.

Insider tip: Not sure about which colors to pair together?? Check out the paintings, print scarves or even bouquets that you admire. Then reproduce those colors in an outfit. If the combo seems too bright, then add in a neutral.

Accessories
Over and over I tout the magical capabilities of accessories. They give the most basic outfit more interest. In fact, I would venture to say that you could gleam a little of people’s personality by the accessories they wear.
My mom added in this hat as a wonderful way to add more color near her face. This is the trick I used this summer for wearing a non-flattering color.
By the way, the material for this hat was something we have blogged about in the past. My mom made the hat along with many other items.
The other colorful accessory that stands out is the purse. Purses are like footwear in that many women only buy ones that are basic colors so they will go with “everything”. Yet the colorful purses can really give the look some personality.
Insider tip: If you don’t want to spend a lot on colorful purses, it’s good to try some from the thrift/consignment stores. You can even shop secondhand online with thredUp (use my link and receive $10 off) or Poshmark (I’ve written tips and tricks on shopping on this site).

Modern Booties
I’ve had a couple of requests about options for footwear and keeping it stylish. And I would say that adding a pair of print shoes or boots can be a great idea to make a look wonderful.
While we tend to purchase the basic colors for our footwear thinking they will get worn more, I bet you’d be surprised at how your print ones spice up many looks. I think this is especially the case if you tend to wear mostly solid color clothing.
While this outfit is wonderful on it’s own, the shoes can give the look a different vibe. For example if my mom was wearing black boots, I think it’d be more conservative. In my opinion, red booties would make the proportions a bit too half and half. And plain tan boots would also be very basic.
Insider tip: The traditional animal prints are composed of neutrals, so that makes them easy to add to most outfits.
